Led by the no-hit pitching of Lucas Lower, Kylan Strong, and Isaac Segal, Keene shutout Cranston, 6-0.
Lower, who picked up th victory, struck out two and allowed no hits in three innings of steady work. Strong, who pitched the fourth and fifth innings, struck out two. Isaac Segal pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
Offensively, Keene received contributions from Kylan Strong (1 for 4, one run scored), Connor Gaughan (1 for 3), Lucas Lower (1 for 3, two runs scored), Isaac Segal (2 for 4, two runs scored), Peter Brower (two run double), Eric Zecchia (single), and Noah Clark (single).
West Warwick, R.I. 10 Milford, Mass. 0
Led by the hitting of Kyle Henseler (2 for 3, one r.b.i. triple, and one run scored) and the solid shutout pitching of Ray Zincone, Joe Maynard, and Tyler Boisclair, West Warwick (Rhode Island State Champions) defeated Milford (Western Massachusetts Champions), 10-0.
Zincone, who pitched out of two jams in the first and second innings, struck out four batters, walked two and allowed only two hits. Maynard, who walked three batters in middle relief, struck out three batters to end the third inning. Boisclair struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 fourth inning.
In the bottom of the first inning, West Warwick scored three runs on three walks, one hit batsmen, and hits by Kyle Henseler (lead off single) and Andrew In (two run single).
In the bottom of the second inning, West Warwick broke open the game with five runs on hits by Joe Maynard (lead off single), Kyle Henseler (r.b.i. triple), and Trevor Lawton (two run opposite field single).

South Weymouth edges Messalonskee, 3-1.
South Weymouth, Mass. 3 Messalonskee, Maine 1
In the closest game of opening day, South Weymouth (Eastern Massachusetts Champions) came from behind to defeated Messalonskee, Maine, 3-1.
Picking up the victory for South Weymouth was Brian Urmano. Urmano, who pitched all six innings, allowed only one run on seven scattered hits while striking out six batters.
Messalonskee received a solid effort from starter Nick Mayo. Mayo, who worked three innings in the hot and humid afternoon, allowed no hits and struck out five batters.
In the top of the second inning, Messalonskee jumped out on top with one run on hits by Klint Hall and Jonathan Wilkie.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, South Weymouth scored three runs on two errors, one walk, and a bases clearing single by Brian Urmano.
Offensively, Messalonskee received hits from Jared Cunningham (2 for 3), Jon Wilkie (2 for 3), Dylan Burton (1 for 3), Nick Mayo (1 for 2), and Klint Hall (1 for 3).
South Weymouth received hits from Brian Urmano and Jay Davern.
New Canaan buzzes by Hartford, 16-0!
New Canaan, Conn. 16 Hartford, Vermont 0
Led by the pitching of Zach Allen and an offense that pounded out 11 hits in four innings, New Canaan (Connecticut) defeated Hartford, 16-0.
Allen, who only pitched the first two innings, struck out six of the seven batters he faced as New Canaan built a 8-0 lead during the first two innings.
David Giusti, who struck out five batters in two innings of relief, allowed only one hit (Austin Snynder) in the fourh inning.
Offensively, New Canaan received contributions from Colin Tiller (1 for 3, two runs scored), Klye Levasseur (two runs scored), Zach Allen (r.b.i. single), Alex LaPolice (2 for 3, one double, two runs scored, and 2 r.b.i.'s), Zack Smith (r.b.i. double), Justin Clark (2 for 4, two doubles, two runs scored, and 4 r.b.i.'s), Harry Mooly(r.b.i. double), Thomas Williams (one run scored), Jim Fahey (1 for 3, two runs scored), and David Giusti (2 for 3).
West Warwick Ten Year Olds Win District and State Championship!
The West Warwick Cal Ripken 10 year old All Stars recently captured their second consecutive State Championship this week. The Rhode Island Champions, who finished second to New Milford (Connecticut) in the 9 year old New England Regionals last year, will host the 2008 10 year old New England Regionals this week. West Warwick, who has gone 16-3 in All Star play the past two years, will face Milford (Western Massachusetts State Champion) on Saturday night at 6:00. West Warwick 28 Jamestown 1 (District South Opener)
In their District opener, West Warwick erupted for 22 hits in four innings and cruised to a 28-1 victory over an overmatched Jamestown nine.
Offensively, West Warwick received contributions from Kyle Henseler (3 for 4, one double, three runs scored, and 4 r.b.i.’s), Ray Zincone (1 for 5, three runs scored), Matt Grenier (5 for 5, one double, one triple, four runs scored, and 5 r.b.i.’s), Tyler Boisclair (3 for 6, three runs scored and 3 r.b.i.’s), Trevor Lawton (4 for 5, two doubles, five runs scored and 3 r.b.i.’s), Mitchell Moore (1 for 5, two runs scored and 2 r.b.i.’s), Joe Maynard (two runs scored), Mike Pellerin (1 for 2), Caleb Hoyle (one run scored and 2 r.b.i.’s), Brian Moretti (two runs scored), David LaMountain (2 for 2, one run scored and 2 r.b.i.’s) and Andrew In (2 for 3, one home run, two runs scored, and 2 r.b.i.’s)
West Warwick 9 Apponaug 4 (District South Second Round)
Led by the solid pitching of Matt Grenier, West Warwick defeated Apponaug, 9-4. Grenier, who threw 62 of his 103 pitches for strikes, allowed no earned runs while striking out ten batters in five innings. Closer Trevor Lawton, who worked the sixth inning, allowed only one run.
After allowing two runs to pass on an error in the top of the first inning, West Warwick rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Henseler led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored one out later when switch hitting Matt Grenier, batting from the right side, hit a towering double of the left field fence. After two outs, Trevor Lawton and Mitchell Moore walked to load the bases. Grenier scored on when Joe Maynard beat out an infield grounder for a hit and Lawton later scored on a bases loaded walk to Andrew In.
In the bottom of the second inning, West Warwick added four more runs on hits by Ray Zincone (single), Joe Maynard (r.b.i. single), and Tyler Boisclair’s two run double which hit the right field fence.
Offensively, West Warwick was led by Henseler (one run scored), Ray Zincone (1 for 4, one run scored), Grenier (1 for 3, one double and two runs scored), Boisclair (3 for 4, two doubles, two runs scored, and 2 r.b.i.’s), Lawton (three runs scored), Moore (1 r.b.i.), Maynard (2 for 2, 2 r.b.i.’s), In (1 r.b.i.) and Mike Pellerin (single).
West Warwick 15 Apponaug 14 (District South Championship)
West Warwick, which had to come back three times against a solid Apponaug nine (14 runs on 14 hits, 5 walks, and 4 errors), benefited from twelve walks, one hit batsmen, and three errors to win the District South Championship, 15-14, in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Kyle Henseler r.b.i. single.
Offensively, West Warwick received contributions from Henseler (1 for 3, two runs scored and one game winning r.b.i.), Ray Zincone (1 for 3, two runs scored), Matt Grenier (1 for 2, one double, one run scored, and 3 r.b.i.’s), Tyler Boisclair (2 for 3, two runs scored, two doubles and 4 r.b.i.’s), Trevor Lawton (2 for 2, two runs scored and 1 r.b.i.), Mitchell Moore (1 for 3, one double and 2 r.b.i.’s), Brian Moretti (one run scored), Caleb Hoyle (one run scored), Mike Pellerin (1 for 2, double and one run scored), David LaMountain (two runs scored and 1 r.b.i.).
West Warwick 5 CLCF 1 (State Tournament Second Round)
Led by the solid pitching of Joe Maynard, Ray Zincone, and Tyler Boisclair West Warwick, who received an opening round bye in the State Tournament, defeated CLCF (Cranston) 5-1.
Maynard, who struck out eight batters and threw 48 of his 78 pitches for strikes, allowed only three hits in four innings of work. Zincone and Boisclair allowed only one unearned run and one hit in the final two innings of play.
In the bottom of the first inning, West Warwick took an early 2-0 lead when Ray Zincone (fielder’s choice) and Matt Grenier (single and stolen base) scored on a Tyler Boisclair ground out and an error.
In the bottom of the third inning, West Warwick scored two more runs on hits by Boisclair (r.b.i. double), Trevor Lawton (infield single), and Mitchell Moore (r.b.i. single).
West Warwick 9 CLCF 5 (State Tournament Championship)
Utilizing a seven run, five hit, fifth inning, West Warwick came from behind and captured their second consecutive State Championship with 9-5 victory over CLCF. One common trait which West Warwick has displayed in their victories over Apponaug and CLCF was their ability to come from behind. Simply put, West Warwick, which has gained a lot of experience in going 11-3 in All Star play last season, has found the ability to work through adversity.
West Warwick took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Joe Maynard walked, moved to second on a bunt single by David LaMountain, and scored on an errant throw when Ray Zincone reached on a fielder’s choice. Zincone, who advance to second on the error, scored when Matt Grenier singled down the right field line.
CLCF, however, came right back with one unearned run in the third inning and two runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Trailing 3-2, West Warwick responded with seven runs on five hits and two errors in the top of the fifth inning. Joe Maynard led of the inning by reaching on an error and moving to second on a passed ball. Dave LaMountain, then reached on a fielder’s choice putting runners at the corners. Maynard, then, tied the game up when Kyle Henseler reached on an error. After one out, Matt Grenier, batting from the left side, took the first pitch and opportunistically hit a high fly to the right field fence for a two run triple. With momentum back on their side, West Warwick received four more timely hits in the inning. Contributing to the offensive onslaught were Tyler Boisclair (r.b.i. single), Trevor Lawton (line drive double off the left field fence), Caleb Hoyle (pinch hit r.b.i. single), and Joe Maynard (two run double).
With a firm 9-3 lead at hand, starter Matt Grenier and closer Trevor Lawton held off the CLCF bats for their second consecutive title. Grenier, who threw 47 of his 75 pitches for strikes, struck out four and walked only one in five innings of work for the victory.
Offensively, West Warwick, which recorded ten hits, was led by Grenier (3 for 4, 3 r.b.i.’s), Boisclair (3 for 4, 1 r.b.i.), Lawton (1 for 4), Caleb Hoyle (1 for 1, 1 r.b.i.), Joe Maynard (1 for 3, 2 r.b.i.’s), and David LaMountain (1 for 2).
Team Highlights:
West Warwick’s goal of becoming the first team from West Warwick to participate in the Cal Ripken World Series may seem unrealistic to some, but to the twelve players and three coaches of this year’s 2008 team, that goal could become a reality if they continue to get solid pitching, play good defense, and bang out timely hits with runners in scoring position.
West Warwick’s pitching staff (Matt Grenier, Ray Zincone, Joe Maynard, Tyler Boisclair, and Trevor Lawton) has plenty of depth and experience. Matt Grenier, who has won eight of nine games the past two seasons, has struck out 60 batters in 38 1/3 innings of pitching. Ray Zincone, who finished with a solid 4-1 record last year, has struck out 41 batters and allowed only 20 walks in 30 innings of work the past two years. Joe Maynard, who has added much needed depth to the starting rotation, excelled in District and State play by striking out ten batters in five innings of work. Besides the triad of starters, West Warwick has efficient, hard throwing relievers in Tyler Boisclair and Trevor Lawton.
Offensively, West Warwick, which batted .387 (55/142, 37 singles, 15 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 home run) in District and State play, has the ability to string along a big inning.
